DIY Pixie Hat for an 18-Inch Doll – A Scrap-Busting Sewing Project with Free Sewing Pattern and Sewing Tutorial

I recently drafted this adorable Pixie Hat for an 18-inch doll, perfect for the fall season, and today I’m delighted to share the pattern with you! It’s a quick and easy project, ideal for beginners and anyone looking to use up fabric scraps.

The hat features a charming pointed crown and ties that fasten under the doll’s chin to keep it securely in place.

I have included the link to the free pattern below.

The measurements of the doll I used are as follows:

  • Head circumference: 12.5 inches (31.75 cm)

  • From one shoulder at the neck, over the forehead, to the other shoulder at the neck: 11 inches (27.94 cm)

Fabric requirements

You may be able to make the entire hat from scraps left over from a doll dress, T-shirt, leggings, or pajamas.

Main fabric: 11.5 inches long x 5 inch wide (29.2 cm × 12.7 cm)

Fabric for bias tape: An 8-inch-long strip, approximately 1 inch wide, for binding the lower edge.

A 31-inch-long strip, approximately 1 inch wide, for binding the front edge and making the chin ties.

If you’re using store-bought double-fold bias tape, choose one with a finished width of ¼ inch (6 mm) for a neat, delicate finish on small doll garments and curved edges.

If you're using fabric strips, then the width before folding should be 1 inch (2.54 cm).

Cut the strips on the true bias, at approximately 45° to the fabric grain. The usual rule is to cut double-fold tape at four times its finished width.

Fold the bias strip lengthwise in half and press lightly to create a center crease.

Now lay it flat and fold the long edges 1/4 inch towards the center and press. Press the strip in half again.

How to Print and Assemble the PDF Pattern Pages:

There is only page to print. Seam allowances are included in the pattern.

Seam allowances: 1/4 inch

Step-by-Step Sewing Tutorial (with Pictures):

1. Sew the back seam: Fold the outer fabric in half with the right sides facing each other, matching the back edges. Stitch along one side using a 1/4″ seam allowance to form the back seam of the hat. Serge the raw edge of the seam allowances and press it to one side.

2. Finish the lower edge: Pin the long edges of the double-folded bias tape along the lower edge of the hat, encasing the 1/4 inch seam allowance. Sew along the edge. The image below shows the right side of the hat.

3. Finish the front edge: Pin the long edges of the double-folded bias tape along the front edge of the hat, encasing the 1/4 inch seam allowance. Stitch in place, while leaving 10 inches of extra tape at each end to form the ties that will fasten under the doll’s chin. Fold the short edges of the ties 1/4 inch to the wrong side before sewing them along the long edge.

The pixie hat is ready!

This simple pattern is a great way to use small fabric scraps and create a cute accessories for your doll.

I hope you enjoyed making this quick and easy project.

Happy Sewing!
