How to Draft an A-Line Skirt with Elastic Waistband?

Today I am sharing the pattern draft and sewing tutorial to make an A-line skirt with elastic waistband. Since I am using the elastic waistband, there are no darts in this pattern and also no opening for zipper or hooks.

Drafting this skirt is very easy that even a beginner can do it, as we need only two main measurements: the hip round and the skirt length. (Waist round is needed but it's just to decide the length of the elastic for the waistband.) Let's see how to draft the skirt.

We will draft the quarter part of the entire skirt (this is what we usually do when we draft sewing patterns), and then use this pattern to cut the front and back of the skirt each on a folded fabric. In the below pattern drafting image, I have shown at which side we should keep the fabric folded when we cut the patterns out.)

Measurements needed:

1. Skirt length (from the waist to the length you want---this is waist to knee for the skirt I made, minus the width of the waistband [which is 1.375 inch])
2. Hip round
3. Waist round

Pattern draft:

Skirt (front and back):

A-B = hip round/4

(Note: If we use the waist measurement for A-B, we won't be able to pull the skirt up as it will be too tight at the hip as there is no opening for fastenings like a zipper anywhere in the skirt. That's why we use the hip measurement. This is applicable for non-stretchy, woven fabrics.)

A-C = 3/4 inch
Join B and C with a curvy line.
C-D = skirt length
D-E = hip round/4 + 3 to 4 inches (for women's sizes, add 5 to 7 inches)

E-F = 3/4 inch (for women, this is 1 to 1.5 inches)
Shape hemline D-F.

Waistband:

A-B = C-D = hip round

A-C = B-D = 3.25 inches

Add seam and hem allowances to the pattern pieces.

(Note: The seam allowance for the hemline edge of the skirt should be 3/4 inch. I have wrongly marked it as 1.5 inch in the figure above. Sorry for that.)

(Note: The seam allowance for the bottom edge of the waistband should be 3/8 inch. I have wrongly marked it as 0.25 inch in the figure above. Sorry for that.)

I have posted a free printable PDF sewing pattern for an A-line skirt on this page for kids' sizes 1 to 12 years. Do check that out!

Let's start sewing the skirt:

Cut two pieces for the skirt (for front and back) each on fold.
With right sides facing, join the sides of the skirt.

Open and press the seams flat. Serge or zigzag the edges, or trim the edges using pinking shears.

Hem the bottom of the skirt.  First, fold 1/4 inch to the wrong side and press well.

Again make an 1/2-inch fold, press well, and sew.

Now admire the neat hemline you have just made.

Turn the skirt inside out.

Your skirt is almost ready. All you need to do is, attach the waistband and feed the elastic into it.

Fold the waistband in half lengthwise with right sides facing, and join the raw edges leaving a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Pin the lower edge of the waistband to the top edge of the skirt and sew, removing the pins as you sew around.

Trim the edges with pinking shears or serge it.

Fold the top edge of the waistband down 1/4 inch and press.

Fold down again to cover the seam and sew along the folded edge, leaving a 3-inch opening to insert the elastic.

Feed the elastic through the opening (length of the elastic = waist measurement - 1 inch, width = 1.25 inch).

Overlap the ends of the elastic by 0.5 inch and place a few stitches over the overlap to secure the ends of the elastic.

Sew the opening closed and that's it, you have made a cute A-line skirt.

See you again with yet another tutorial.

A-Line Dress Free Pattern Download -- Size 3T

I am so excited to share my first ever free pdf pattern with you. This is for the A-line dress with Peter pan collar (size 3T) that you see in the picture, for which I had posted a tutorial here in 2011. The link to the pattern download is here. Print the pattern at 100%. Do not scale. Since this is my first e-pattern, I would like to hear your valuable comments about the pattern.

The pattern pdf contains 8 pages + 1 pattern assembly page. Seam allowances are included in the pattern as shown in the tutorial. It was lot of work and consumed more time. So as of now, I have created the pattern only for size 3T. I will try to make the pattern for other sizes too if I ever get time to work on it.

Reversible Wrap Top

I made a reversible wrap top today following the tutorial on the Birch Fabrics blog by the talented Jess of Craftiness Is Not Optional (one of my favorite sewing blogs).

It's an adorable top and I liked the pattern very much. It was easy to make, as the tutorial was easy to understand.

Check out Jess's web site for more fabulous tutorials and patterns. Also don't forget to check out the Birch Fabrics blog. They have posted some amazing tutorials, and their fabric collection looks great.

Kids Clothes Week Challenge

I have signed up for the Kids Clothes Week Summer Challenge--July 15-21, 2013 and made four outfits for my daughter. Two tops, a skirt, and a dress.

I aimed for seven outfits, one for each day, but was able to finish only four. However, I am happy that I could make at least four. I always have one reason or the other to actually sit in front of my sewing machine and do some work. But this time I can't excuse myself. My thanks to Meg for hosting the KCWC and motivating sewists all around the world.

Here are the photos of the four outfits I made:

1. A-line skirt:

2. Summer top:

I am yet to sew the buttons.

How to Draft a Kameez (Kurta)?

A kameez (also called kurta) is a long tunic worn usually with a salwar (also called pajama pants) and a dupatta (also called stole or shawl or scarf). The pattern draft provided here is for a simple dartless, medium-fit kameez as in the photo above.

Measurements needed:

1. Kameez length
2. Bust round
3. Waist round
4. Hip round
5. Waist length
6. Hip length
7. Shoulder (shoulder tip to shoulder tip)
8. Neck depth
9. Shoulder width (Take this measurement from shoulder tip toward the neck. This may vary according to how close or broad you want your neck to be. Mine is 2.5 inches)
10. Sleeve length
11. Sleeve hemline circumference

I have posted a free kameez (kurta) sewing pattern for women in sizes XS to XXL HERE. I have provided the download link and other details in that post. You just have to download the A4 pattern pieces for your size, assemble them, trace or cut out your size, and use it to make your kurta. It's a semi-fitted straight kurta with short sleeves. Hope you may find it helpful.
